In a move that sent shockwaves through the gaming industry, Microsoft recently announced its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, one of the largest video game publishers in the world. This merger has the potential to reshape the landscape of gaming as we know it.
Activision Blizzard is known for its popular franchises such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Candy Crush. With this acquisition, Microsoft gains access to a treasure trove of intellectual property and a dedicated player base that spans across the globe.
For Microsoft, this merger represents a significant expansion of its gaming division. With the addition of Activision Blizzard, the tech giant now has an even stronger foothold in the gaming market and is poised to compete more aggressively with its main rival, Sony.
One of the key advantages of this merger is the potential for exclusive content on Microsoft's platforms. With Activision Blizzard under its umbrella, Microsoft can now offer exclusive titles that can only be played on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. This could be a major selling point for gamers who are looking for unique gaming experiences.
Furthermore, the merger also brings together two major players in the realm of cloud gaming. Microsoft's Azure cloud platform is widely regarded as one of the best in the industry, and Activision Blizzard has already made significant investments in cloud gaming infrastructure. By combining their resources, the two companies can push the boundaries of cloud gaming and deliver more immersive experiences to players.
For Activision Blizzard, this merger offers a chance to leverage Microsoft's vast resources and expertise. The company has faced criticism in recent years for its handling of various issues, including allegations of workplace misconduct and declining player interest in some of its franchises. With Microsoft's support, Activision Blizzard can potentially address these challenges and regain its footing in the industry.
Microsoft's acquisition could also lead to changes in the company's culture and practices. As part of the deal, Microsoft has committed to implementing measures to improve workplace conditions and foster a more inclusive environment. This could be a positive step forward for Activision Blizzard and the gaming industry as a whole.
What Will Happen Next?
Activision Blizzard and Microsoft will want to find a way to get along with regulators in the US and UK in much the same way they did with the EU, by agreeing to a set of demands. But the UK already rejected Microsoft’s remedies when it blocked the deal. The CMA will have to decide whether or not Microsoft’s concessions are sufficient enough to let the deal go through.
Right now, Microsoft is trying to win over as many governments as it can, with wins in China and the European Union bringing bargaining power to the table.
After the EU approved the deal in May 2023, Alex Haffner, a competition partner at London law firm Fladgate, said in a statement sent to Esports Insider: “Critics of the CMA’s stance, of which there have been many, will inevitably seize on [the EU’s] decision as proving the point made that the UK’s regulatory regime is too rigid and stifles innovation. Microsoft and Activision’s lawyers will also use the decision to provide greater ballast to their appeal of the CMA’s decision, which is in the works.”
According to Axios reporter Stephen Totilo in June 2023, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer recently told the press he was “committed” to the attempted purchase of Activision Blizzard, stating that they’re “trying to get to solutions” with regulators.
With the news of Ubisoft entering the fray as a possible solution to CMA blocking the deal and the EU thinking about the deal yet again, it seems like we are no closer to the end of this saga. It remains to be seen whether and how the deal could go ahead if the UK fails to give its blessing.
